Buying a car in 2026 is really two decisions: the car, and how you finance it. The headline rate is rarely the number that decides what you actually pay.
Everyone looks at the windscreen price. The number that actually decides your car finance is the weekly repayment. That figure comes from the rate you qualify for, the term, and the fees stacked into the deal. Car finance in 2026 also splits three ways now, because petrol, hybrid and electric cars each finance a little differently. This guide covers how car loans work today, what repayments really cost, and how the three fuel types compare. You get to choose with everything in front of you.

Most car loans in Australia are secured car loans. The car is the security, so the lender can take it back if the loan is not repaid. That lowers the lender’s risk, which usually means a lower rate than an unsecured loan. You borrow a set amount and repay it over a fixed term, with interest. Your rate is set on your risk, not on one headline number.
The money then moves in one of two ways. A secured car loan pays the funds straight to the seller, so you need to have found the car first. An unsecured loan puts the money in your account instead. That suits a private sale, an older or modified car, or topping up what you already have. To see the range of car loan options across different situations, start at that hub.
One number is worth understanding before you compare anything, and that is the comparison rate. Moneysmart is the consumer site run by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). As it explains, a comparison rate rolls the interest rate together with most fees and charges into a single percentage. Because of that, two loans with the same headline rate can cost very different amounts. Lenders must show the comparison rate with equal prominence next to any advertised rate. That makes it the fairest figure to compare on.
Your rate comes down to a handful of things. The age and value of the car matter, along with your credit profile, how stable your income and address are, and which lender you are matched to. A strong profile narrows the gap between the best and worst rate on offer. The same borrower can be priced very differently from one lender to the next. That last point is where a broker earns their keep.
We compare across 50-plus lenders on our panel. Your profile goes to the lender that prices it best, rather than the one lender a dealer happens to use. A good credit history, steady work and a newer car all push the rate down. If one of those is weaker, the right lender match often matters more than haggling over the rate.

On a $50,000 car loan over five years at 6% p.a., repayments work out at about $222 a week, with roughly $7,900 in total interest. These are illustrative figures for November 2026, not an offer. Your own rate depends on your profile and the car. Change the term, change the rate, or add a balloon, and the weekly number moves a lot.
Here is how the same loan compares three ways.

A balloon, sometimes called a residual, is a lump sum left to pay at the end of the loan. It lowers the weekly repayment, because you finance less each week. The trade-off is more interest overall, and the balloon still falls due at the end. Lenders generally offer a balloon only on a new or near-new car bought through a dealer. They need the car to be worth enough to cover that residual.
Want a rough number before you go any further? Our car loan repayment calculator gives you an indicative figure in a couple of minutes. No application, no credit check.
Not necessarily. A longer term lowers the weekly repayment. We often set one up with a lender that charges no penalty for paying it out early. You get the low weekly commitment without a balloon waiting at the end. You can also clear the loan ahead of schedule to save interest once your cash flow allows. The trade-off is more total interest the longer you take.
A balloon does the opposite at the end. It falls due as a single lump sum. That usually means refinancing it, often at a higher rate because the car is older by then, or selling the car to clear it. A longer no-penalty term avoids that lump-sum moment entirely. For a buyer who wants a low repayment without a trap at the end, we often prefer it to a balloon.

For a lot of drivers, electric is now the cheapest to run and close to level on finance. Battery electric cars outsold every other type of new car in Australia for the first time in August 2026. That was 27,078 sold, a 24.9% share, and a 169.4% jump on the year before (VFACTS). An electric car loan works almost the same as any car loan. What changes is the running cost, plus a small rate discount on eligible cars.
The running-cost gap can be large. One of our customers was spending about $500 a week on fuel for a work ute, close to $26,000 a year. We ran the numbers on a roughly $50,000 electric vehicle over seven years. We took the long term deliberately, to keep the repayments low. The finance came to about $8,657 for the year. Even after charging and servicing, they finished roughly $16,000 a year in front. That is one real deal, not a typical result, and your own numbers will land somewhere else.
On the finance itself, a green car loan for an eligible electric car usually sits around 0.5% p.a. below the same lender’s rate for an equivalent petrol car. Lenders fund these through dedicated green credit lines. For November 2026, published green rates for new electric vehicles start from around 5.54% p.a. (5.57% comparison rate) with some lenders, and from 5.99% p.a. (6.34% comparison rate) with others. Hybrids mostly sit on a standard car loan. Many green loans exclude hybrids or plug-in hybrids, so check the eligibility rules.
Your saving tracks your kilometres more than anything else. A low-kilometre driver saves far less. Without a home charger, you pay public charging rates every time. If you are weighing up an EV specifically, our guide to electric car loans goes deeper on eligibility and the current rate bands.

Not on the same car loan by default. A car loan only funds what is on the vehicle invoice. A home charger is not on that invoice, so it cannot simply be added. You have two clean ways around it. Flag the charger from the start, so one loan can cover the car, the charger and the installation. Or finance the car with a car loan, then add a separate personal loan for the charger and the install.
An EV car loan behaves like any secured car loan here. The car is the security, and the charger sits outside it unless the lender agrees to bundle everything up front. If the charger matters to you, say so at the application stage. Adding it after the car loan has settled usually means a second, separate loan.
If a novated lease is on your mind, the timing matters. The Australian Taxation Office confirms the full electric car Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) discount continues in full until the end of March 2027. To qualify, the car must sit under the $91,661 fuel-efficient luxury car tax threshold for 2026-27. Changes announced for 1 April 2027, including a tiered wind-back, are proposed only. The ATO’s own wording on them is that this measure is not yet law. Do not count on the full discount continuing past 31 March 2027.
Plug-in hybrids have not been eligible for new novated leases since 1 April 2025, apart from a narrow binding-commitment exception. A novated lease can suit a high, stable income with a supportive employer. It also lowers your income on paper and ties the car to your job. We cover the detail, including the traps in an EV novated lease, separately. For your own tax position, check the ATO electric car discount rules or speak with your accountant.

The age of the car is one of the biggest levers on your rate. A new or near-new car earns the lowest rate, because it is easy to value and holds its worth. An older car prices higher. Within reason there is often no hard age limit, as long as the car is still worth close to what you are paying. Where you buy matters too, because it changes the type of loan that fits.
Buy from a dealer, and a secured car loan pays the dealer directly once everything is signed. Buy privately, and an unsecured loan is often the cleaner fit, because the funds land in your account and you pay the seller yourself. Private sales, older cars and modified cars all lean that way.
Watch what gets added at the dealer. Add-ons like paint protection, window tint and insurance products get financed into the loan. You then pay interest on them for the full term. As a rough guide, $500 of add-ons on a $50,000 five-year loan adds around $300 in interest, which makes the true cost closer to $800. A finance figure that looks high for the car is often the first sign of add-ons stacked into the price.
A dealer usually sends your deal to one of three or four lenders on its own panel. We assess the application first, then compare it across our panel. Every application is weighed against responsible lending rules, rather than pushed at a single product. The same profile can be priced very differently depending on where it lands. That is the whole argument for comparing before you sign.

Car finance makes sense in a few clear situations. It is also worth being honest about when it does not. It tends to fit if a few of these sound like you:
On finance versus cash, the right answer depends on what your cash is worth to you. Financing can keep your savings free for things that earn or grow. An unsecured loan drops the funds into your account, so you shop with cash in hand. Pay with a no-early-payout-penalty loan and you can still clear it early once you are ahead. This is general information, not advice for your situation.
If you are already struggling to meet repayments you have, a new loan is not the first step. Speak with a free financial counsellor through the National Debt Helpline first. Whichever way you lean, you will have your own dedicated lending specialist to walk you through it and make sure the finance fits your situation.
