This guide covers the honest decision behind a wedding loan. It looks at whether to borrow at all, and how much you could realistically borrow. Then it covers what a loan actually costs, and how to put your best file forward.
You have found the venue. Now the vendor invoices are landing, and the numbers do not quite match the figure in your head. A wedding loan can bridge that gap. But it only helps if you know what it really costs, and whether it is the right move for you right now. This guide covers the honest borrow-or-save decision, real borrowing amounts, the true cost of a wedding loan, and how to put your best file forward. You will have the full picture before you sign anything.

There is no separate “wedding loan” product sitting on a lender’s shelf. It is a personal loan, priced and assessed the same way as any other personal loan. The only thing that changes is what you spend it on. Lenders look at your income, your expenses and your credit history, not the occasion printed on the invoice.
Moneysmart’s own personal loan calculator is built on the same principle. A personal loan is assessed on your ability to repay it. What you plan to spend it on does not come into it. So compare offers marketed as a “wedding loan” against an ordinary personal loan on the same terms. The one with the better rate, fees and flexibility wins, whatever the label says.

Saving first feels safer, but weddings do not wait for savings to catch up. Most venues and vendors ask for deposits well before the big day, often a couple of thousand dollars up to $10,000, with more due along the way. A loan works like a separate wedding fund, ready when those bills land. Your savings stay untouched for other goals, like a house deposit.
Unexpected costs are common too. Extra guest fees, venue surcharges or a budget blow-out on the day can stretch things further. So can an unrelated bill landing at the same time, like a car repair or a medical cost. Either one can set you back on other goals, not just the wedding budget.
A practical structure many couples use is choosing a lender with no early payout penalty. Stretch the loan term to keep monthly repayments low while the wedding bills are landing. Once the wedding is behind you, pay the loan out early using leftover savings or cash gifts. That cuts the total interest you pay.

How much you can borrow comes down to one thing: serviceability. Lenders look at your combined income and regular expenses, plus a buffer, to see what you can comfortably repay. A loan of $50,000 or more usually needs the lender’s top risk tier. That means a strong credit score, solid job tenure, time at your address, and a clean loan repayment history.
Most couples spend more than they think. Easy Weddings’ 2026 Australian Wedding Industry Report surveyed more than 4,000 couples. It found the average Australian wedding cost $38,252, against an average starting budget of $29,471. That is a 23% overrun. Costs vary by state too. NSW couples spent $42,322 on average, Victoria $39,502, and Tasmania the least at $25,423.

A wedding loan costs exactly what a personal loan for anything else costs. There is no special “wedding” rate or fee tacked on top. You pay the loan’s interest rate, plus any fees the lender charges, on whatever amount you borrow. One current Fox product example carries no establishment fee, only a $10 monthly account-keeping fee. That is worth comparing against any “wedding loan” marketed with extra charges built in.
Choosing a longer loan term keeps your monthly repayment lower while you are covering wedding bills. Once the wedding is behind you, a lender that charges no early payout penalty lets you pay the loan out early and cut the interest you pay overall.
As a general guide, the gap between a standard personal loan and a secured car loan works out to around $4 a week. That figure is based on a $50,000 loan over a five-year term. It shows how close unsecured and secured pricing can sit once you are a well-qualified borrower.

The biggest lever for approval is a clean, well-prepared file, not luck. Lenders want to see stable income, manageable existing debts and a track record of paying what you owe on time. Meeting the basic eligibility criteria matters too. For our personal loans, that generally means being 18 or over, a permanent Australian resident, and earning at least $45,000 a year.
Full-time work for a month or more, or casual work for three months or more, both count. Beyond the numbers, lenders like to see steady time in your job and at your current address, since that shows stability. On our own file, most wedding loan applications, around nine in ten, are made in one applicant’s name. A partner’s income is often factored in informally to help with expenses, without joining the application itself.
Having your documents ready before you apply speeds things up. You will typically need photo ID and three months of bank statements. PAYG applicants also need two recent payslips. Self-employed applicants can use a BAS or an accountant’s letter instead.
Want the deeper detail on secured versus unsecured options, and how the application itself works? Our guide “Your Dream Wedding: Making It Happen with a Personal Loan” covers that step by step.

Turnaround varies by lender and how complete your application is, so treat any timeframe as a general guide, not a promise. On our own site, we note that applying online usually takes just a few minutes. Once approved, funds may be in your account as soon as the next business day. That is a typical outcome, not a guarantee tied to your supplier’s deadline.
If a venue or vendor deposit has a hard date, apply with enough buffer for document checks and any follow-up questions from the lender. That gives you room to move if something takes longer than expected, without adding pressure to your own decision.
